When you purchase a vehicle one guaranteed, ongoing cost you can expect is fuel. Without fuel, your car isn't going to be very mobile. Why not find a way to save on fuel? Aside from using an app on your phone to the find lowest gas prices in your area, caring for your vehicle properly can also help you keep your costs lower.

Oxygen Sensor

The oxygen sensor is responsible for monitoring the rate at which exhaust flows in and out of the catalytic converter. This information is then transmitted to the computer inside your engine. The reason this data is so important is that the engine will adjust its fuel injection level based on this reading.

When this sensor is failing, it will send inaccurate information to the engine, which could cause it to operate at a higher fuel injection rate than necessary. Ultimately, this means your vehicle will burn more fuel than necessary. If you've been told your oxygen sensor is failing, don't ignore this. You can replace this with a new unit or a used one.

Air Filter

When you get an oil change and the technician informs you that your filter needs to be replaced, they aren't simply trying to make an up-sale. If the filter is dirty and you want to improve your fuel efficiency and protect your engine, take this seriously.

When a filter is old, it lowers the efficiency rate at which the engine can perform. The harder the engine works, the more fuel it will burn. This is especially the case when a car is on the older side. How often a filter needs to be replaced varies depending on the type of vehicle, driving habits and other factors so reference your manual.

Tires

Tires play a key role in the maneuverability, safety and function of a vehicle. When they are old and worn, you should not expect to get great fuel mileage. Tires with limited tread or that are misaligned, overinflated or underinflated can also increase the rate at which you burn fuel.

To stay on top of your tires, make it a habit to visually inspect them at each oil change. During the inspection, look for signs of extreme wear, such as lack of tread. You should also check the pressure level of the tires at this point. When you recognize that it's time to replace, go ahead and do it sooner, rather than later.

When it comes to keeping your fuel costs lower, always remember that the price per gallon isn't the only factor. Ensure you're maintaining your vehicle with the idea of lower costs in mind.
