Leaking brake lines on any vehicle can be a huge problem. If the brake lines are leaking, air can get into the system through the leak, and the fluid level in the system will eventually fall until there is not enough pressure in the system left for it to function correctly. In both situations, a failure of the system can result, so dealing with the leak as soon as you see it is critical.

Checking For Leaks

Looking for leaks around the brake lines on your car or truck does not have to be complicated. The brake lines start at the master cylinder under the car's hood and run along the frame to each wheel on the vehicle.

Leaks from the lines at the wheels often show up with puddles of fluid on the ground or brake fluid on the back of the tire. Taking the time to look under the vehicle once a week can help you find a leak early, and if you see something that you suspect is a leak but are unsure, you can stop at a local brake shop and have them check it for you.

It is also a good idea to check the area around the master cylinder for any fluid to ensure the brake lines that connect to it are not leaking. Check the seal on the cover to the reservoir while you are at it, and take a look at the fluid level in the reservoir because a low brake fluid level is another indication that there could be a leak somewhere that you have not found yet.

Flexible Hydraulic Hoses

Many brake systems have flexible hydraulic hoses that connect the brake lines on the vehicle's frame to the wheels. The hoses allow the tires to move with the suspension without damaging the brake lines. Over time, the rubber brake hoses can deteriorate, and if they do, they can start to seep fluid through them. If you see brake fluid on the outside of the rubber hydraulic hoses behind the wheels of your vehicle, they may need replacing.

Take your vehicle to a brake repair shop and have them check the hydraulic hoses in order to let you know if they need to be changed. Changing the rubber brake hoses is not difficult, but it does require bleeding the brake system to remove air after replacing the brake lines.

Some vehicles require specialized equipment to properly remove the air from the brake system. Air left in the system can reduce the vehicle's ability to stop or cause the anti-lock braking feature on the car to malfunction when it is needed.

Keep these tips in mind when looking for auto parts, such as hydraulic hoses or brake lines.
